Morris W. Hitson, 91, died early January 5, 2015 at St. Joseph's of the Pines after a recent illness.  He went to a better place and is no longer suffering.
Born in Shelby, Montana and raised in the hills of Montana, he used to talk about being fortunate enough to ride to high school on a horse because his father was an engineer for the Great Northern Railway during the Depression and most people were very poor. He was a very handsome and charming gentleman. He attended the University of North Dakota before joining the Marine Corps where he had a distinguished record in WWII as a USMC Corsair carrier fighter pilot giving close air support to Marine infantry fighting in the Pacific theatre. He was recalled during the Korean War and flew the newly developed supersonic jet fighter planes. Later he had a construction company in New Bern, NC and then worked as a civil engineer and project manager for large US international companies like Brown and Root and Bechtel overseas on large construction projects in countries like Iran, Libya, and Greece. We are sorry to see him leave, but are glad that he is no longer suffering.
He was preceded in death by: two brothers, R. J. Hitson of Tacoma, Washington and James Hitson of Ketchum, Idaho, and one sister, Mildred Hitson Renner of Great Falls, Montana.
He is survived by: daughter Elizabeth H. Strickland and husband Bill; son Morrie Hitson,Jr. all of Southern Pines and their mother Elizabeth Bowman Edminson; grandchildren Caroline McGrail and Brian Strickland; great-grandchildren John Patrick McGrail and Elizabeth Margaret McGrail.
The family will receive friends at Powell Funeral Home in Southern Pines, Tuesday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
